In addition, websites can be designed dynamically with PHP. This means that the content of a website can look different each time it is accessed. For example, PHP can be used to retrieve information about website visitors. In this way, the offers on the website can vary depending on the visitor's location.
Many well-known CMS (content management systems) such as WordPress, Joomla and Drupal are also based on PHP, which are usually used together with a database (MySQL/MariaDB).
Platform-independent
PHP is executed on the server side - when you visit a website that contains PHP instructions, these are executed directly by the web server on which the website is stored. The web server then only sends the final result to your computer (browser).
History and development of the scripting language
The first version of PHP was developed in 1994 by Rasmus Lerdorf. He created PHP as a personal tool for maintaining his website. Version 3 marked the start of the rapid, worldwide spread of the scripting language. From 2004, object-oriented programming was supported much better with the release of version 5. The latest major version, PHP 8.2, was released on 8 December 2022 and is currently being regularly updated at short intervals.
