Domain extensions: An introduction
The best-known and most widely used domain extension worldwide is .com. Among the total number of registered domains (according to Verisign / DNIB more than 354 million domains in the first quarter of 2023), the .com domain has been registered 174.8 million times. The second most popular domain .cn for the People's Republic of China has been registered 20.3 million times so far and shows the difference to the global distribution. The top five popular domains also include .de, .net and .uk with 11 million registrations. In Switzerland, the balance of power is reversed: The .ch domain predominates with 2.6 million registrations and is chosen as the TLD by 58.3 % of customers. The .com ending follows in second place with a market share of 23.3 %.
Allocation to specific countries
Each country has an assigned domain extension, these are called ccTLDs (country code top-level domain). When you buy a domain with this extension, you are telling the search engine: The content of my domain is of particular importance for a specific geographical region. Examples of ccTLDs are .nl, .br or .es - these endings are assigned to a location in a specific country, in this case the Netherlands, Brazil or Spain. However, the endings are also used for other purposes: .co is assigned to Colombia, for example, but is often used as an abbreviation for company/corporation.
Build a domain to suit the nature of your business
There are many original domain extensions for products or services to choose from. .clothing is suitable for fashion, .coffee for a coffee shop or .yoga for your sports studio. The choice depends on the nature of your business. If you like these extensions, take a look at KreativMedia's list of available generic TLDs in the "Business and Commerce" category.
Please note that some top-level domains require prerequisites. This also applies to a .swiss domain: private individuals cannot currently submit a registration application here. However, the opening for natural persons is already being planned for 2024.
Domains for your location: Show where you are!
Does your company particularly identify with its location? Do you want to create a presence in your city? Then we have great news for you: many cities and cantons offer their own domain extensions! By linking your company name to the location, such as mybusiness.zuerich or companyXY.ag, you send a clear message about where you operate. There are numerous options, from .be for Bern to .lu for Lucerne. A domain extension like this has been proven to improve search engine optimization for local results. And if you need a domain that works across cantonal borders, there are options like .swiss, .earth or .world!
Stand out with special extensions
At KreativMedia, we offer outstanding domain extensions that are particularly suitable for private websites and creative e-mail addresses. These include the ngTLDs, the new generic top-level domains, which were gradually introduced by the registry ICANN from October 2013.
Did you know...?
Swiss International Airlines withdrew from an application for the .swiss TLD - this was subsequently awarded to the Swiss Confederation.
ICANN has approved creative extensions: With .fun you can add a humorous touch to your website, launch a loving baby photo site with .baby or get started as a wedding planner with .wedding. A domain name like myrestaurant.pizza will certainly be remembered by your visitors.
It doesn't always have to be a .ch domain: With alternative TLDs, you can draw attention to your website in a creative way.
